Its a hat badge. The Suffolk Regiment. What size is it? It looks like it could be a helmet plate from a Service Helmet. Can you show a picture of the reverse?
Thanks LCpl. Here's a photo with a ruler so you can see the size. It doesn't belong to me and it's in a sealed case so there is no way to show the back.
Nice piece! I agree that it appears to be a helmet plate. The crown style is Queen Victoria's which would date it from about 1898 to 1901-02. A desireable collectible.
Hello Ray, the badge might date back further than 1898 but as EODGUY says, it has a Queens crown - Queen Victoria reigned 1837 to 1901). In times past there were many more types of military units with links to specific parts of the UK than there are today. As well as infantry (eg Suffolk Regiment) there might have been Cavalry and Yeomanry units (Yeomanry were a kind of auxiliary army organisation that were mounted infantry - thousands were deployed during the Boer War 1899 - 1902). If the badge is for the Suffolk Regiment its age will be after 1880 - the Cardwell reforms did away with the regiment numbering system that previously appeared on helmet plates, eg pre 1881 the Hampshire Regiment had the number 37 on its helmet plate, denoting the 37th Regiment of Foot. I have sometimes seen books over here that show photos of various old badges. I think the modern successor to the Suffolk Regiment is the Royal Anglian Regiment. It might be worth your while to contact the regimental museum to see if they can help you.
