image.jpgHello, saw this was being offered, gent asked for offers on it. I have no idea if it's real and never seen something like it before. Anyone know if it's real? Or seen one? Can't find anything on the gent Harold, or the chemical company in regards to the project. I would be interested for right price. Any info welcome, thanks

My suspicions are it is fake. August 6, 1945 is the date of the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima. Japan did not surrender until the 15th.
The text notes his ". . . contribution to successful conclusion of World War II. " It wasn't over yet if dated the 6th. And the difficulty in finding any info on the person or company doesn't help in authenticating. I'd let him keep it.

Mallinckrodt has been making chemical supplies for many years and the lab where I work used to have a large stock of their chemical items dating back to the 1930's (now all disposed of as hazardous waste), see: http://www.mallinckrodt.com/ (At their web site section "Our Story, 1942"- Mallinckrodt purified and provided the Uranium Oxide for the Manhattan Project)

Henry Stimson served as United States Secretary of War (1940 - 1945), that's his stamped signature, probably not a real signature which was and is typical.

Awards similar to this are still handed out right and left in the U.S. Government, made up and dated before award ceremonies. I know this because I've received some.

Still doesn't prove its the real thing but I would venture to say it is real but not worth all that much as it is probably just one of thousands handed out during WW2.

Just my opinion.

bdgreen, you work at the Malinckrodt facility in St Louis? I did a lot of environmental work at 2 chemical sites and 2 of their old rad sites there (I live just north of STL in IL).

just type manhattan project certificate into google and look at images.........the page was full of them????????

I clicked on one image and the link says 600,000 people worked on the project, so if everyone got a certificate, thats quite a few. http://www.mphpa.org/bios http://www.atomicheritage.org/profile/george-e-hyde
So looks like the certificate may be ok.

another link http://richlandbombers.com/gallery/1940s/1945-08-06Certs.html

Like Rick I was suspicious of the date but it does appear all the others out there are the same.
Maybe value is linked to the facility at which that person worked?

No doubt very collectable item, atomic bomb items seem to be of great interest in the US particularily judging by ebay listings.

the price, well thats only ever what someone is prepared to pay - how much do you want it?

one on ebay right now, so this may help give you some idea of price (though it looks as though its been on a while?) ......... http://www.ebay.com/itm/World-War-2-Atomic-Bomb-Victory-Certificate-Manhattan-Project-/251308947264

Thanks Kev, I searched it just after this and found a bunch of them. The guy wants 200$, but me and some other collectors where thinking more of around 50-100$ because of condition. As cool of a piece as this is, I don't have the 200$. Thanks for the info too, good to know in case I see any others.
