Linking 20mm Hispano shells

Hi there, after a little advice.ive got some 20 mm Hispano shells and links to make up a belt.Thing is im unsure exactly how to fit the links.I dont want to damadge anything as the links appear that they will fit very tightly. As far as i can see the shell needs to be layed down and the clip pushed straight onto it(with quite some force!),the only alternative is to slide it in length wise(!) but this would probably scratch the case more than necessary, the third option is im a complete numpty and missing something.Any advice? Thanks

They are tight. There are hand linkers. And multi round linkers. A piece of alum. tubing to just fit over the OD of the shell case should suffice. And tap with a mallet. The pictured belt was loaded on that linker, so gives an idea of about where the links are positioned.
The black tube with the "mushroom" head was sold as an Israeli surplus hand linker. Up and left of the linked rounds.

Gotcha, thanks.I think also now having done some that half the trick us pushing the cartridge into the clip not the other way, much more to get hold of.Many thanks

Image to show proper location of link on cartridge.
Try oiling or waxing the link/cartridge to ease fitting. Interesting for the Hispano, the British were against oiling cartridges yet the US advised it.
