Can anyone identify this 1" dia lead bullet? It's just under 2" long, although may have been longer when first made, as the previous owner(s) have hammered it! There's also a pin-hole in the side...........?

1" Aiming Rifle ?

I am thinking 1" Aiming rifle as the rounds had solid Lead bullets some with a copper "gas check" fitted to the rear-this one may once have had one but it looks like there is nowhere to fix it which may just be where the "Hammered" part of it comes in?
As for the small hole may just be someone making sure it was solid?

Thanks for the quick reply - I've got some of the 1" aiming rifle heads in my collection, as well as the earlier 1" Nordenfeldt brass-jacketed machine-gun heads; and it isn't like these. I should have pointed out the four cast 'studs' around the body, to engage in the rifling.

I know this will amuse the old hands here, but I really thought that with the help of cloves of garlic and wooden stakes I and others had rid the world of the scourge of calling bullets or projectiles "heads"! Aaagh!!

Depotman - sorry, but I am really not having a go at you, as the dreadful term is used by dealers in advertisements all the time. However, the head of a cartridge is the other end where the headstamp is.

Sorry Tony, but in my usual area of large calibre stuff, shells and projectiles are often called heads. I'll try to watch my language when involved with the smaller bits!

Unknown Lead Bullet

Thanks for the info - it definitely looks very similar to the Jacobs bullet on Tony's referral link.

Well now is your chance to tell them they are wrong too!:xd:

1"

It is probably 4 bore as Falcon says. I have fired a 4 bore muzzle loading rifle and I have seen others.

Naval aiming projectile.

Hello,
This is my 1" aiming projectile, ( kindly identified by Tony E), I have recently obtained a case for it and have filled the rifling grooves with chemical metal, given it a coat of lacquer and seated it in the case.
All best,
navyman.
