Label H Numbers

relbut

Well-Known Member
In my quest for 303 labels to draw and record, for my own interest, I have noticed another number is sometimes also on the label. The following is H number, wrapper/box contents, manufacturer & date, supplementary number.
  • H 3282, 32 Ctges 303 Mk 7, GB 28-4-55, RL 4-10-54 51-5146
  • H 3282, 32 Ctges 303 Mk 7, K 31-12-54D, 51-5903
  • H 266, 10 Ctges Blank 303 L Mk V, BE 8-6-44, 52-6071
  • H 2512, 48 Ctges Incendiary 303 B Mk VIIz, RG 7-7-44, 51-6523
  • H 3348, 15 Standard Ctges 303 Mk 7, RG 3-7-57, WT 13731
  • H 3527, 20 Ctges Blank L Mk 9Z, RG 25-7-58, 51-2083

In Tony's Book,Headstamps and Markings 303 Inch, Pg 80 has:
  • H 3541, 32 Ctges Tracer 303 G Mk 8, 5T-51196

Noticed on a box of 7.62mm Inspection
  • H 3526, 32 Rds 7.62mm Inspection L3A1, RG 31-2-56C, Wt.64870

I would like to know of their significance - any thoughts?

They will be to do with the printing contract for the label which, for UK production, would be managed by HMSO. Wt and WT decode to 'Warrant' which is an authority to print and the other notation is looks like a short form for a printers 'imprint'. Both the warrant number and the other code would allow the contract for the label to be identified.

.....and another one to add to your naval list N 1030 12 rds .380 inch ball Mk 2z...Kynoch 31 12 1953 :tinysmile_grin_t:

Cheers
Tony

Tony,

In case you are interested the 'modern' label L Numbers equate to the drawing number for the design of the label. The unclassified drawing below shows the gist of it.
