Jacketed Hollow Points

Hi just after a little clarification/confirmation. I have just received an inert 44spl JHP round which i have been advised is legal to own without a Sec5 licence because the bullet has been drilled on the rear.

Is this true? Or should i remove the bullet and destroy it?

thanks Nathan

Yes, Jacketed hollow points are indeed covered by Section 5 and so are illegal without appropriate authorisation.

However, do you mean that your bullet has been drilled right through to the rear so that it is in effect a cylinder? If so I suspect you would be OK but I would not like to give a legal opinion on it! Safest thing is to get rid of it unless someone can give a more definitive answer or legal precedent.

drilling part way through an 'expanding type' bullet to 'stop it being used for its original use',but gives the appearence of a undrilled bullet when re assembled, seems to be an accepted way in the inert ammo collectors circle to 'legally' collect these types of projectiles....personally I am not so sure if (A) it actually works (B) if it is an accepted method to inert in the 'eyes of the law'.....very much like oiling primers, (A) it doesn't work (B) Hampshire constabulary do NOT regard it as a method of inertion to legally own without licence.

Cheers

sure glad my 1000 + rounds of 9mm 147gr Silver tips (and Black Talons) are safe here, or at least until the government tries to take then away

Probably best not to let them know you have them then.......oops too late!:tinysmile_angry_t:

Thanks guys, i don't think i'll risk it then. I think i'll pull the bullet and replace with lead or an FMJ. On a sidenote i was reading on here last night that you can have a variation put on a FAC to collect ammo, is there anyway of having an FAC for just collecting ammo with the actual firearm?

Cheers Nathan

Police forces may well differ in their attitudes, but in Derbyshire I managed to get a FAC covering most ammo in view of my work in this field - but it was made clear to me that was only because I don't own any guns.

Once you can provide some form of bode fide for asking, such as membership of the IAA or ECRA then there should be no problem in getting a variation to collect ammo, subject to the usual security and medical conditions etc.

Whether or not you have firearms is a separate matter. I have an ammo collecting variation including full Section 5 authority but also shoot and have a number of rifles as well.
