Iraqi code factory

Does anyone know the meaning of the letters "HGE" and "HEM" for Iraqi munition code factory?
Mogway

Good question!
Also interesting to know if there are reports on the factories in Iraq after 2003 when they got inspected and evaluated etc. or are these reports still classified?

I've seen some of the reports on the CW stuff, which were still UN classified - the problem was that in the reports was a lot of info on where the equipment came from (countries that sold stuff to Iraq in the early years), and to declassify would require that everyone was willing to be identified. Not in my lifetime.

Normally the info gets out by countries requesting the classified reports, then copying and releasing internally what they want with the markings removed. Happens all the time. You and I however, have about zero chance of getting an original report.

I was fortunate to be able to read a lot of the UN reports oout of Iraq, jack McGeorge was their weapons expert, he and I shared a number of projects over the years before his death. The only things I remember being classifed was the formulations and some manufacturing techniques. As for ordnance it was pretty much what everyone has seen, except for some bio stuff. I remember a long night of booze and war stories with him, we wre going through a load of files - what I remember ( and what I'll swear too) is there was plenty of written evidence about ord items going to Syria, plus enough evidence to show a bio program. the problem was , and I think jeff made the point, there were a lot of coutries that sold stuff to Iraq and even helped them. In the end the UN will not say with all their might that a bio weapon was present or stuff went to Syria becasue they did not have an full up loaded item physically in hand, or what they considered enough evidence about Syria - I have some of JAcks files on this, but the rest went away after his death. As soon as I feel alittle better I'll pull a list of countries I can ID and post it along with what they sold or did.

HEM was an explosive mfg or loading plant. The letters show up on various HE projectiles if I recall correctly

yes, the letters "HEM" appear in the marking of projectile bodies. "HGE" appears in the paint marking on the munition or cartridge case.
I think the letters "HGE" means "Republic Iraq" or equivalent and "HEM" is a factory code (perhaps Al-hiteen factory at Al Iskandariyah).

The "H.G.E" letter group is also found on their handgrenades, but it's also unknown to me what they stand for.
