Has anyone heard of Uchinada Ordnance Proving Ground? Any information?
I have a line I am told was taken from a magazine: Equippedwith bulldozers and trucks, a contingent of U.S. G.I.s late in 1952 began torearrange the sand dunes of Uchinada, a small (pop. 5,953) fishing village 200miles west of Tokyo. The U.S. Army had taken over about four square miles ofUchinada's sand and ocean as a firing range on which to test the Japanese-madeartillery ammunition that it was buying in million-dollar lots. Before long,105-mm. and 155-mm. shells were whooshing over Uchinada's beaches
The understanding is that the US was having the Japanese produce ammunition for us to reduce supply lines for the Korean War, it was known as the Uchinada Ordnance Proving Ground. I'd never heard of it, and know nothing about it. There is this to add though -
Any information is welcome.......
