Identify Projectile Please

Good afternoon all,

I was hoping that somebody may be able to help me identify this projectile. It is 305mm from base to tip, 92mm diameter at the base and has a 35mm double driving band. It also has four holes approx 60mm deep in a trefoil arrangement on the base, possibly tracer? As it is so rusted I can not tell whether it is all one part or if the ridge at the top is a fuze adaptor. I initially thought it was a practice shot with tracer for the US 90mm gun but not sure due to the unusual nose.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

TIA.

I'm not sure how close the diameter of your projectile is to 92mm. If it were 94mm then it would make sense that it is a 3.7 inch AP-T projectile. The rotating band looks like 3.7 inch. The multiple tracers is a UK characteristic of some tank rounds, and not used by the U.S. I haven't ever seen a 3.7 inch AP-T of this design though. The conventional design is just a pointed shot projectile.

Thanks for the answers so far, great help! Has given me a good steer in the right direction. I'm fairly sure now that it is an APCBC shot minus the ballistic cap. HAZORD, have you got any examples of other natures with this tracer set up?

Is there anyway you can weigh this item? The diameter, as Hazord suggests puts it as a 3.7" or if used in the Tortoise SP gun known as - Ordnance QF 32 pounder. The cavities on the base, what diameter are they? is the top portion threaded?

Regards

Looks a lot like a 3.7" APCBC round minus the ballistic cap as others have posted. Some 17 Pr AP rounds have a similar tracer arrangement. 3.7 & 32 Pr..jpg

Help me out here. Didn't you post that same question over on the IAA Forum? A couple of us answered, but now the thread seems to have disappeared, completely. I am I losing my mind?

In response to your question, the UK 120mm HESH has 4 tracer elements spaced 90 degrees around the outer edge of the base of the projectile. I'm thinking your projo is late war 3.7 inch. Yes, the 32 Pdr is the same diameter, but the rotating band is totally different.

I'm posting some photos from BOCN of 3.7 inch projos. The bands on these look exactly like yours. Rotating bands are extremely important in identifying what gun projectiles are designed for.nd is completely different

I'm also posting a photo of a 32 Pdr HE projo from BOCN. The band is completely different, and the photo of the projo that Quartermass has posted has a totally different band on it also.
