This item has been found by SPOTTER and is 2" by 7" looks like a 2" mortar but my not be. Any Ideals???

He is in an EOD Unit and requires some help.

Thanks for putting this on for me JTP ,a bit of extra info although it was found on an old anti-tank/grenade range we have found 1000s of 2inch mortars in the vicinty,It is totally empty the top ? resembles closely a practice 2inch mortar but it is will not accept a cap from the 2inch prac round,its correct in size but smaller in depth.The large hole in the bottom DOES NOT go all the way through,it goes approx 3/4 of the way.It has a series of holes going round near the top ? as can be seen in the photos.
We are unsure as to what this is wether its ordnance ,part of a target or even domestic scrap(farm machinery ?)
Positive id required please.
