Hi Guys, need guidance here. WW2 Projectiles are not my forte hence why I ask you Guys. The Calibre on this round is puzzling me and need guidance so I can ID it. 5.25 in is my best guess but I thought that was a Navy Gun size and the length is wrong. Any help appreciated.

The Identification lettering is on the base. I can see the F and S for forged steel. What are the letters written in circular form around the base?

5.25

Youve answered your own question! 5.25 Naval shell of british origin, i dont have no info just a case! This was a separate loading round as is obvious, Pity the bands been nicked, scarce shell.:bigsmile:tig.

5.25" gun

Also used as an AA gun in land service in limited no,s if i remember correctly.

Thanks, the only info I had access to gave a much shorter length for the round and that baffled me. Thanks again, any more info or a diagram would be great.

5.25" gun

Hi,if you check the Navweaps site under Uk 5.25" gun it lists SAP,HE,ILLUM and 2x different types of practice for HA and LA firing,I suspect yours is a practice as it has a plug replica trace unit fitted. Tig.

I have technical drawings of chemical filled British naval 5.25" projectiles somewhere! I'll dig them out on Monday.

Also used as an AA gun in land service in limited no,s if i remember correctly.

According to the handbook the AA gun only used the Mark 3C high explosive shell and Mark 1 paper shot. (the dual purpose AA/CD gun was also issued Mark 2C/NT or 4C/NT SAP shell).
