This is the top of something quite big. A US bomb plug?

Fuze Nose Plug

This looks like a Fuze Nose Plug or Plug Nose Closing M117, used on the Mk82 500lb Practice Bomb. However it would also fit on the Mk83 1000lb and Mk84 2000lb practice bombs as I believe the fuze well and thread type are the same.

The Canadian Air force uses the Plug Nose Closing to hold the Nose Fuze Simulator on the front of the bomb so technicians can practice preparing a nose fuze without actually using a costly inert fuze.

Hope this helps.

Fuze Nose Plug

I can't tell you when they came into service, but we still have them in stock today. As far as I know there aren't used anymore, or are used very rarely, since more and more guided munitions are being used.

Within the Canadian arsenal the Fuze Nose Plug and the Nose Fuze Simulator were used as a training device in place of the Fuse Bomb Nose M904. This fuze is also currently in stock, but not generally used.

I am not sure if there are ever circumstances where a Fuze Nose Plug would be used when a bomb is fitted with an electronic fuze. I will talk to some of the zoomies and see if I can get an answer.

Cheers
