Not best of pics but can anyone positively identify this preferably with pics of what one looks like in non rotted condition,,i have no info at all on this other than it was found on a uk range thats also been used by the germans since the late 40s,,apparently there are no holes in the spigot so its not a mortar round approx 3in X 24in experimental ??
thanks for looking

Looks like a 1950s - 60s recoilless. The US had them in 75, 76 and 105 in a style similar to this. The 105mm had a tail boom that was over two feet long. If this is the round there were a number of variations in this style and none of them were around for long, it is fairly rare to see one in a collection or museum. They also do not show up in many of the pubs so can be hard to ID. I've got a good head in 105 but only a blown set of fins.

thanks mate,,just had a quick google and can see the similaritys nicely,,would you think this could be a practice type as apparently theres nowhere for a nose fuze ,unless its under the cone

Spotter,

It is a HEAT round, with a base fuze electrically fired from impact on the nose. There is a piezo (lucky) under the very tip of the nose.

Allan,

There is already a post somewhere on the site, where I previously posted the images above. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get the search feature to find things on this site, but there is an additional discussion out there in BOCN cyberspace somewhere.
