ID a piece from a written description?

Hi,
This could be difficult, I have spotted a complete round in a local junk shop. I have no piccies but I can describe it, firstly it's supposed to be WW1 there are only a few small markings on the case bottom, and it doesn't apppear to be German or English. The overall height is about 8 inches x 2.5 inches approx, with a solid projectile. Unfortunately, the projectile has been polished = no markings! The only outstanding feature of this item, which might be the key to ID it, is that the projectile has a corrugated brass sleeve around it. This begins just above the drive band and extends approx 2 inches or so up the projectile.
Any thoughts/ideas on this will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Cirus,
It sounds like it could be a 47mm Hotchkiss projectile. I will try and post a pic later for you to compare unless anyone else has one to hand.

47 mm Hotchkiss

Here is one with a "corrugated" driving band.

47 mm calibre-Armour Piercing High Explosive.

This particular one (one of a pair) was a contract for the Japanese Navy and bears an anchor sign.

If it is for sale at a reasonable price I would reccomend you go back and get it. This is a nice item. If I would have seen it for sale in a junk shop I'd have bought it on the spot.

ID success!

Hi,
Many thanks, you done it again! It looks like it is a 47mm Hotchkiss projectile. In 's what's a fair price? There is a slight split in the case at the top and the percussion cap(?) in the base is missing.
Regards
Cirus

Hotchkiss revolver cannon common pointed rounds were selling for up to 80 on ebay at there height, now the price would be closer to 40 (going by how they sell on S.A.)

Thats my estimate, others may disagree!

Quatermass.

I think Quatermass is right with his price guide, i have seen quite a few of these over the years and at least half of them seem to have had a small split in the neck. it must be a weak point in these cases.
