Hello everyone

Recently found this Early Armstrong fuze from 180yrs ago, was fired in 1864.
Its very similar to the E-pattern time fuze however im unsure what version this is and whether it has the timer part on it under the corrison.
It has only been out of the ground a week and all ive done is pick the dirt off it.
Thanks for your thoughts and help

Here are some early fuzes in section, including Armstrong, Boxer, Pettman, et al.
For info on all Marks of Armstrong fuze I suggest British Artillery Ammunition, Volume 4, Fuzes, by David Ibbetson, who has essentially collated pretty much all of the official publications including Treatise on Ammunition, 1874 to 1915, and Textbook on Ammunition, 1926 and 1936, together with R L lithographs etc from 1868 etc etc.
Saves such as us from hours of research (delightful tho' that is) and includes diagrams and illustrations of virtually all Army and Navy fuzes up to and including No 330 as well as the oddities such as Hotchkiss and Nordenfeldt base fuzes wch did not sit within the numerical series.
Only problem is that I spend hours just mooching through the pages, by wch time my coffee's cold and I'm getting told... etc etc.

Thanks Alan1 i appreciate seeing the cross section of the fuzes, I know of the books David has created however the challenge is where to find one in NZ. I looked at purchasing his books before covid but it was going to cost me a lot for postage just as much as a book to get them to NZ and i couldnt justify spending that amount of money to the wife.

Ok. Postage charges are savage, especially to your neck of the woods.
Not sure if any of it is available on line, if not you could always ask David if he could scan the relevant few pages and send them to you, wch may enable you to positively id the Armstrong time fuze that you have.
Alan1.
