Help With Identification

John P

Well-Known Member
This is the first time I've been on for help so I hope I get things right!! I'm trying to id a case that I have. It is a cut down 303 case with a lead bullet weighing approx 18 grams with what appears to be a brass "cap". This has a lead filled slot. The headstamp is WRA,.303. 1940. I don't know if it is a result of someone "playing" or a "proper" round. I have attached some photos as well. As I have what appears to be a set of measures from 2 - 3 drams in 1/2 dram increments. These are housed in a rosewood box, any ideas as to what they are for or where they're from? Any help would be much appreciated. Regards JP

Hi John P,My two pennorth,Could the measures be for black powder or perhaps something to do with chemistry, the round looks to be something someone has cobbled together but if it is some kind of round I am sure a member on here will be able to identify it for you,
Regards,Don,

JP - No ideas as to the .303 (just wondering if someone playing with it to use in a .410?)
As to the Dram set I think it may be a set of proof or calibrating weights as used by the old Weights & Measures people for checking traders scales - I do not think gun or odnance related.
The Scottish saying `a wee dram` springs to mind!! Might be drink related?
Interesting items though

I agree with H,
The .303" does seem home made, the big brass screw would seem to confirm,WRA were manufactured by the US for the UK as standard .303" ball during WW2 and I also think the 'dram' items are proof measures for spirits.

Tony http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dram_(disambiguation) just found this link for dram

Thanks for the comments. The reason I thought maybe the dram measures were ordnance related was this type of weight measurement is used in shotgun cartridges. I thought maybe they the weight of standard loads for different cartridges, No6, SG etc.
