Hello,

Does anybody know the meaning of the following markings in the red squares on the attached picture?

Also does anybody know the meaning of the following symbols that I found on an 18Pdr shell?

Thanks,

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The I* is the Mark No of the cartridge. The * indicates that it is a 'modification of the Mark I'. In the case of a 2.95 this has to do with the use of a cap rather than a Primer.

The other mark is the monogram of the case manufacturer, being "MN", standing for Maxim Nordenfelt, I believe.

Just to add some further information. The 3 x 2.95in cases I have start with case model 1* without a date then MkII dated 8 Aug 02 and then MkIII dated 23 Oct 11. I would offer that the Mk1* case is pre-1900. A further thought is that I have come across a number of these cases with a split running from the crimping mark to the case mouth possibly indicating that Vickers were having a few problems with this case.
