Heavy Flak Rounds.

Just aquired a round I've been hunting for years and I thought I would give anyone interested a peek.

12.8cm Sprgr Patr L/4.5 Flak40 mit ZeitZ S/30. For size comparison left of the Flak40 is a 10.5cm Flak38/39, 8.8cm Flak41, 8.8cm Flak18/36/37, 10.5cm SK/C32 Coastal defence/Flak round.

The largest Anti Aircraft gun used during WW2, by the time it came into service in 1942 the use of mobile guns above 10.5cm was prohibited so most were mounted statically or mounted on lowloader railway cars. By wars end 34 twin mounts (12.8cm Flakzwilling40) were permenently installed in cities such as Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna.

The round dwarfs the other Flak rounds, the complete round weighed 100lbs (45kgs) so the loaders wouldn't have needed any extra excercise to keep in shape !

Stunning rounds, really nice to see such good quality items.

As a tank/anti-tank collector I have a few flak cases rounds with AP projectiles ontop....including Flak 41 (8,8cm), Flak 40 (12,8cm), Flak 38 (10,5cm) and Flak 36 (8,8cm)

Sadly none are as good condition as yours, but ill try to take pictures and post.

Thank for showing..

Excellent beautiful collection. I've wanted a 12.8 cm for years. All I have is an empty case. The Flak rounds are always so impressive.

Thanks for sharing!

Very nice! Are most of the paint finishes original as well? The 8,8cm Flak18/36 isn't, but I can't tell about the others...

Thanks for all your comments chaps, glad you like 'em.

Matt, as far as original paint is concerned the only ones I am sure about are the Flak41, SK/C32 and strangly, the Flak18. Others ???

That's a very nice -nearly mint condition- collection of German flak cartridges. Beautiful stuff.
I just finished cutting two 12,8cm shells, and yeah, they are huge.:D
Regards , DJH

Why was the use of mobile guns above 10.5cm prohibited?

Really nice rounds by the way.

I think the rational on the 1942 ban was purely logistic.

Originally, the barrel had to be unshipped and carried on a separate four wheel trailer (Special Trailer 220). A design breif went out to a number of manufacturers to design a one load transporter which was won by the Meiller company. Even so, the whole ensemble was 15m (49ft) long and weighed 26 tons. Cumbersome would be fair comment (British 4.5" AA weighed 17tons/12ft wheelbase ready for transport).
