Why are there so many different types of Ammunition boxes for .303 rounds? There are H 1,3,4,13,19,20,21,22,26,29,31,50 and 51. There may be more.....
I can understand the H1, holds 1000 rounds in bandoliers or 1248 rds in cartons and the H3 holding 500 rds in cartons and the H13 being an economy version of the H1 but why the H4 holding 850 rds or the H19 holding 1000 rds, why didn't they just use an H1 or an H13? Then there's the H21 or H22 holding 600 or 700 or 864 or 900 rds?It all starts to make sense again when you get to the H50 and 51 which were a standard size and just held as many as they would take, be it in bandoliers, belts or cartons.
Can anyone explain why there were soooo many variations on a theme? Were there specific stowage locations that required specific box dimensions which would in turn lead to odd numbers of rounds in boxes. 48 rounds in a carton? 32 rounds in a carton? Why? The Charger cartons and bandoliers make sense but the Bren mag was designed to take 30 rounds (but usually had 28 )
If you can answer any of the above I would be most grateful.
Cheers
Gary
