The items attached have been burning up the YOUTUBE site with statements like these are the chemcial weapons used in SYria, etc etc.

By all ID features they are grenades, smoke or maybe CS, they ahve the standard grenade fuze, 4 vent holes, fits well into your hand. Supposedly made of a poly type plastic. In some pic's the fuze appears to have been blown away from the top (not view of the item top).

here is a link to one of the vids http://www.enduringamerica.com/home/2013/4/30/syria-analysis-chemical-weapons-attack-is-this-plastic

I doubt chemical, but who better to find an ID on these then this site. I ahve exhausted all my files.

Not that I have the answer but I seriously doubt that nowadays anybody would use a chemical hand grenade loaded with something beyond CS/CN/irritants.

Jeff?

The Yugos played with both hand and rifle grenades loaded with BZ, but talking with one of their technicians he stated that while they tested them they never fielded them. That is the only exception in the last 30 years or so that I can think of.

Under the chemical weapons treaty RCA used as a method of warfare becomes a chemical weapon. At the same time, however, a country can use anything but a schedule 1 chemical (nerve-mustard) as "law-enforcement". Some years ago the US and UK opened a dangerous door when they took RCA to Bosnia, then Kosovo, Iraq, etc. as a means of "non-lethal or "less-lethal" way to deal with civilians. The intent was so that the troops had something other than ball rounds to defend themselves and others. Where it fell/falls under the treaty is a little more tricky.

Syria is not a signatory, so the point is irrelevant. What may be relevant however, is that after the US and US did this it was less than 2 years before Russian manufacturers began offering military RCA munitions for sale for "law enforcement". This included 500kg dispensers for use on high speed aircraft, 82mm and 120mm mortars, RPGs that included their armor defeating capabilities plus a CS charge to irritate "lawbreakers" etc. I did not look closely, but a couple of the fuzes on those pieces looked similar to some of the Russian grenade designs? Most of the CS ones I've seen used a UZRGM type fuze, but I'm a little out of date and they could be selling something newer - ?
