I'm still of the belief that this is some type of fire extinguishing grenade but I can't find one like it so any one have any ideas?

Hi Eodtek and EOD,Just a hunch, could it be the chemical container that fitted into the old conical type (like the "Pyrene") fire extinguishers, something similar was suspended in a cage inside the case of the extinguisher and when the plunger at the top was pushed it broke the glass and allowed the contents to mix with the liquid inside which caused a build up in pressure, the pipe feeding the nozzle went all the way to the bottom of the of the extinguisher whatever was inside, possibly just water then squirted out under pressure, much like shaking a can of coke then putting just a small hole in it,I could of course be barking up the wrong tree,if I am,my apologies,
regards,
Don,

This has been puzzling me too but i think your on the right lines here Don, i have 2 of the brass type extinguishers that used a bottle with lead stopper when turned upside down the stopper fell out with the contents of the bottle and made pressure in the extinguisher filled with water, the wire seems to be there to hold it in place, perhaps you had to bang the extinguisher on the floor and this piece dropped down and broke the flask releasing the contents,,,,,,,,,, ????????????????????? Dave

Yeah, I'm still of the belief that it's a fire extinguisher grenade too. I just can't figure out the type. Most were decorative in nature because they were designed to sit on shelves. I'm going to try and get the guys that recovered it to see if they can do a scan of the liquid and see what it is. If it's Carbon Tet then we know it's a fire grenade.

That's Great you still have the item, see if there is some sort of filler part, looking at the picture that could be under the handle bit,,,,,, Dave

Hi Dave, remember years ago,(well I can)in cinemas there were conical Pyrene extinguishers on hooks on the wall or stood by the doors, they had a chrome knob on the top,I think these were the ones where a sharp blow on the top would break the glass inside via a plunger and hey presto intsant pressure, there was a similar type but cylindrical shape that had a brass circular frame protecting a brass knob, these were turned upside down banged on the floor which pushed the brass knob in and broke the glass, this type then operated while held upside down, the cages that held the glass bottles/vials can still be found lying about in old scrapyards now,the extinguisher case was steel, the top was brass, both were good scrap value, the cage was some kind of monkey metal,(possibly spelter)and of no use,it is very unusual to find an unbroken (if it is from an extinguisher)glass in such good condition,I wonder if it would be worth Eodtek asking his local fire brigade for their oppinion,
Cheers,
Don,

Don,

In a roundabout way they are asking me. I don't even know if they still have it or have destroyed it. Still working on that.
