Very happy to have this for the collection.
From my pals the 'Dug-Up' lads.

Im debating whether to bung a repro liner in and use it for my mates stag-do when we go paintballing or leave as is and put it in the collection room?
Your thoughts please.
Ive talced the stampings to highlight.

best

Nice relic M42 Waff,
The 64 marking refers to the size,64cm(medium) and you would need a 56-57cm liner to fit it.
Go for it mate, restore it there are still a lot of 42's about(wouldn't do it to a 35 or 40 though)
I think I still have a pair of liner rivits somewhere if you need them.

Cheers
Tony

go on waff, go for the full restore/refurb job on it,ive got set of spare decals you can have

cheers fellas, looks like i will need a bigger lid though as i need a 59 liner to fit my bonce. :(
I did have a norwegian repaint that i let go on a trade and that fitted.. Why-oh-why did i let it go??
This one stays as is and i will continue the hunt.

cheers

Oh no! decals on a 42!,
Tri colours were orderd removed in 21st March 1940 and the Army service emblem was last used on 28th August 1943,apparently they made good aiming points!
Personaly I have never seen a genuine decal on a M42, except a double rune ss relic Dutch volunteer I dug up years ago, most being field camo painted by the end of the war.
There's an idea Waff why not mix paint and sand and go for the zimmerit finish and top it off with the old chicken wire!?

Tony

I would leave it as is. A beautiful relic. Do you know where it was found?...Dano

I agree,
Not sure Dano. Thanks to the other boys for suggestions though but i will ask the lads when i next see them. This was a last minute 'rush-buy' ;)
Cheers also Foubar for the below 'how-to' guide.

cheers

i have a 42 helmet and i bought it for about 15 euros a couple of years ago.
It was a relic with no original paint on it,and covered in surface rust.
I cleaned all the rust off and mixed up some german field gray, with some ''texture medium'' from hobby craft.
Its a paste that you can add to paint for 'that'type of finish.
I've read that troops sometimes painted their own helmets with all sorts of texture mediums..grass,sand,mud..what ever they could lay their hands on.
There was a factory applied finish, and thats the effect i have gone for and its looks alot more authentic than just sand.
I havent bought a liner or anything and just left it as it is.
Its great fun to do and can make your pot look really good!!
You could always sand it down again if not happy....

Regards
