Hi Ben, that is a German WWI incendiary grenade (also used as smoke grenade, in which case "NEBEL" would have been stenciled on the side) with the stamped metal m1917 friction igniter. Unusual to find with that igniter as it usually had the m1913 bronze friction igniter. This is one of the rarer WW1 German grenades and quite a nice piece. Similar to the asphyxiant German grenade of WW1 except for the plug on the bottom. They are especially hard to find without some sort of repair filler as the bodies rusted quite easily, as you can see in the pic of mine which had been repaired with filler. Yours appears all original metal which is nothing short of awesome. Ther have been more than a few RARER WW1 German grenades showing up here on BOCN as of late. Great find.....Dano
