German 8mm MG Ammo

In closed are pictures of German WWII 8mm MG ammo. I always thought MG ammo was loaded hotter than the standard rifle ammo. But was told by a advance collector this is not so. He said the Germans would pick out good lots and marked them for MG use. The reason for this was that they wanted good consistency that would not interrupt the full auto flow.

MG ammo

It is one of the hoary old myths of ammo collectors that "MG" ammo is hotter loaded than rifle ammo. That is a load of nonsense of course.

It was simply ammo that was kmown to be suitable for the MG 34/42. The MG42 was particularly ammo sensitive.

Also, the Luftwaffe did not like steel cased ammo for their aircraft MGs and continued to procure brass cased ammo throughout the war.

There is nothing special about velocity, pressure or anything else bout so called "MG" ammo!

The remarkable part of this box is that they were using stock bullets.
In the mid 30 the Germans were already preparing the war. Large quantities ammo parts were put on stock.
In this particular label you can see that P490 Hugo Schneider A.G., Plant Altenburg, was getting stock bullets from P186 Metallwerk Wolfenbttel G.m.b.H., (Polte) from 1935.
