German 75mm brass case from 1908 - any info welcomed

Hi All,

I picked up this brass case because it was in great shape, and it was the right price. The possibility of finding a projectile for it I doubt will happen here in the U.S., but does anybody know this type of old shell and what a complete round might have looked like?
I think I have attached the two pictures to the post, they show in the attachments list.

Please include in your reply any pictures of this type if you have them. Again, it is a 75mm case and it is 9 inches or approx 228mm long.

Thanks,
Walt

A 77x230R case for 77mm Feldkanone 96 n.A. The manufacturer and year are clear in the headstamp.

Hi Walt,
See a recent post by Frizzen(in collections) for pics of German 77mm rounds.

Walt,

Your case is probably the most common WWI German case you will find in the states. If you do a search here on BOCN, you can find a number of postings with photos of projectiles. Key in 77mm in the search box.

There seem to be a number of projectiles (fired) available from Europe. It is a matter of getting them into the states that is difficult.

Hi Dick,

Thanks for the advice, I have just been to that recent post by Frizzen, and besides learning it to be 77mm instead of the universal 75mm, I was able to see what the many permutations of the shell looked like. There were some great examples in that collection.

One thing though, I measured the mouth of the case, and it came up slightly out of round, but only slightly, and it measured in diameter smaller than 77mm
but slightly larger than 75mm. Did the Germans measure diameter from the driver band by chance instead of the body diameter?

I was able to fit an American 76mm type projectile into the case and it fit nicely, like a howitzer projectile might fit in it's case.

Walt
