That is a regular German 13.2 Hotchkiss for captured weapons. The Eagle should be Navy though. For some reason there are many more cases than projectiles.

Here a picture of the complete round. Simular projectile than the 13 mm ones, only without a driving band on it.

As I understand it, the case was shortened so that it could be loaded with German 13mm projectiles from the MG 131 without exceeding the standard overall length of the Hotchkiss round.

A nice find - I don't have one of those myself.

I wondered if that was the situation sir, yours is the site I usually visit first when I find something new.
So Im a little confused now,I have a good solid 13mm HE projectile, but it fits way loose in the case, and a good 15mm is way too tight. Was there a purpose made bullet,or was the case crimped around the driving band of a common 13mm?

Tony, the projectile is not the one from the MG131.

TheKees, these here in 13.2 mm have a slim driving band, visible when you have a very close look. This is due to the original design which is a FMJ as we know.

Ah - on reflection, I may have been getting confused with the 15mm ZB vz/60 (BESA) which I think was shortened to take German 15mm projectiles...

Were the German 13mm HE projectiles for the 13.2mm derived from MG 131 shells?

I saw that case myself at SLICS and even though it is outside of my collecting interest thought somebody would be pleased to find it.

The Hotchkiss case was shortened to 93mm before the war, I am told to avoid confusion with the .50 Browning round.

It's a bit more complicated than that. The original Hotchkiss 13.2x99 was identical to the Browning except for the very small difference in calibre, and the two are easily confused.

For the Model 35 Hotchkiss the case was shortened to 96mm, reputedly to avoid confusion with the Browning although I have also read a claim that a different bullet was adopted with a cannelure in a different place, which wasn't compatible with the existing neck length so this had to be shortened.

AFAIK, the 93mm case length has always been associated with German production, using their own design projectiles.

I purchased a collection and one of these was in it. I had never seen one before, but it sure made my day when I found it. I have no idea what's it's worth, but it is sweet!
