Following my turgid explanation of the SX part number I have been asked for a decode of the 'Prefix' found on service drawings. For ammunition the following were used from the 1950s to the 1990s I believe:
QV Small arms ammunition and components 1-inch and under
QW Pyrotechnic stores not contained in shell or mortar bombs
QX Initiating stores; fuzes, gaines, tubes, primers, igniters etc.
RW Cartridges and components other than SAA
RX Rockets, AAD apparatus and components
SV Packages (Boxes, cases, cartons, cylinders, containers etc.)
SX Projectiles and components including adapters and plugs
TV Mortar bombs, spigot ammunition and components
TX Mines and demolition stores
UV Proof apparatus
UX Ammunition tools, gauges, keys and apparatus.
FS Filling schedules for the above groups
I don't think Naval ammunition used these group codes, they continued to use the NOD drawing number prefix.
There is also a PR code but I do not understand how it is used (something to do with respirators).
There is also a list of Weapon group codes and when you are done with that there are 'Suffixes' .
Hope that answers the question.
