CR Gas Hand Held Spray

SpudGun

Well-Known Member
I found this in a box of odds & sods I won at an auction. It is a can of CR (Not CS) Gas Hand Held Spray, for use in Riots etc. Dated Aug 1972. It is an incapacitating agent and a lachrymatory agent. CR was developed by the British Ministry of Defence. Unlike CS gas, which can be washed off with water, CR becomes more painful if you try and wash it off with water. I don't think that CR Gas was in use for long and I've never seen one of these for sale before. (Anybody got an idea of it's value ?) The can is INERT and EMPTY and cannot be used again as it has a hole drilled in it, any contents have long gone. I got next doors dog to sniff the empty can and the dog didn't burst into tears only joking , no animal was harmed in the making of this post.

The AA battery is for scale

Very, very interesting piece SpudGun. Do you want to know more about "CR"?

CR is way worse than CS as it is persistent for up to 60 days. In the US it was considered about 10 times stronger than CS. The US stopped using it because it is carcinogenic.

I watched a buddy inadvertently contaminate himself with it once and I could do nothing but laugh. And I laughed so hard it hurt.

Probably so with that canister. However, there are more than three types of inflammatory chemicals that for one reason or another were dropped, cancelled, or found to be way to dangerous to use.

SPAD = Self Protection Aid Device, just in case anyone was wondering. XT
