Clipped 4 pack Bofors 40mm WWII rounds

Here is one of my newer additions that came to me in the trade that I got "boned" on. A clipped 4 pack of 40mm Bofors shells. I may leave as is or make a repaint project of it, not sure as of yet.. This is something which I do not collect but really like this set. All WWII dated they have that stately look which has "war" written all over it. Looks good in the collection, but wish I had not been taken on that M67........Dano

Dano,
I agree, the cases sure do not show the typical patina and wear that WWII steel Bofors cases normally have. Did you check to see if the date in the headstamp also is in the 40's? If so they are really excellent cases for the vintage. Bob

they look good to me .any chance of a pic of the clip?looks different to mine:tinysmile_hmm_t2:thanks. Darrol

Headstamp dates on the steel casings are 12-44, 10-44, 1-45, 1-45. Believe me I wish they were newer. I have seen the clips in many different forms, here is a pic of mine and I have another steel clip somewhere in my shed that is different to this one. If you notice the clip is dated 1944 also.............Dano

40mm Bofors rounds

Hello Dano,
That clip looks great. I have only five inert 40mm Bofors rounds, the stainless steel one on the right is an inspectors gauge tool which I bought recently. I particularly like the one with the sectioned projectile, I'm still working on that.
Have a good Christmas,
All best,
Guy.

Guy/Navyman

Your L/70 projectile, the one on the far left is very interesting. I've never seen a gray one with yellow band like that. Is it really gray or is it a trick of the light in the photo?

Hello Haz,
I wondered if anyone would spot that. I put the projectile into a spare Bofors case to display it. I've no idea if it would actually fit into a Bofors gun, but doubt it ! The colour is olive drab, hope the picture is clearer.
All best,
Guy.

Thanks Guy, that is what I expected it to look like, the very characteristic U.S. lettering on green body projectile. That projectile is the controlled fragmentation one. It has a hollow cylinder shaped rubber insert inside that contains tungsten carbide balls that are the shrapnel for killing aircraft.

Guy,

There are two 40mm bofors rounds

The 40/60 and the 40/70

The 40/60 is the round that was used on most Royal Navy mountings such as fitted to the old Ton class minesweepers.

The 40/70 was used by the British Army as an AA gun until the 1970s.

The 40/60 case is shorter than the 40/70 unfortunately i don't have the dimensions

Dano, thats a stunning complete clip you have, althought you dont collect WWII it is a very nice item for have in the collection.

Thanks Miguel, I did manage to Google this WWII vintage U.S. use of 40mm bofors anti-aircraft. Take notice of all the 4 packs and the spent casings..........Dano

I dug my other 40mm Bofors charger out of the shed and I was errant in saying it was different as it is exactly the same as the other. It is also dated 1944 but did not show well in photos. One of these days I will put my camera up for sale in my stall at the antique mall!...Dano
PS: Will swap entire 4 shells with charger for something Vietnam but will only do in U.S. for obvious reasons. Ring em up...DK

The variety of 40mm clips seems to be endless. The latest addition is this plastic one. No markings. No clue of its origins. Anybody know?

Thanks for that Rick, I knew there were variants but had no idea just how many. Also really like your dummy marked L70 casings. By the way, that loose charger I have is one you sent me some time back. Apprecianado. Great pics....Dano

Hi Guy, I too drew a wealth of information off this thread (and about 1000 other threads for that matter). You pick up bit of information here and there and before you know it you have learned something important. Aint it grand? Incidently Guy, you have some awesome Bofors rounds. Best to you and yours....Dano
