If it is the case I'm thinking of, it is the fairly common (in the U.S.) 76.2mm Russian case made by the American Can Company in the U.S., to be sent to Russia in WWI. When the war was over, there were still a lot of these in the U.S. that never got sent overseas. Some have little nameplates attached and had surplus 75mm projectiles crimped in them, and were given away for special occaisions.
