Hoping someone can help identify this cartridge case that I found in Normandy on a recent metal detecting trip. It was found in the same area as numerous German and American WW2 ammunition, but suspect that this is much earlier.

The stamps look to be:

17
TE
GN
3

any help much appreciated

thanks

It is a French 8 x 50mm Lebel round made in the third trimester of 1917. The case was made at the Cartoucherie de Toulouse (TE) with metal supplied by GN, but I don't recognise that supplier. Is it definitely "GN"?

Hi harry2111

From what I can see of your Normandy find it looks like a ww1 French 8mm Lebel cartridge,I would assume the 17 is for the year 1917,I am sorry I cant help you much more than that,
Regards,Don,

It looks to me that the GN code is actually CN. According to my listing CN is the French code for one of two metal suppliers, either Atelier Mecanique de Normandie or Etablissements Claudinon. Can anyone say if one of those codes is wrong or did two organizations use the same code?

I have a had another look through the magnifying glass and it does indeed look like a CN, rather than GN.

Thanks for all the info on this so far - much appreciated

I only have Atelier Mecanique de Normandie listed for SAA.
