Can somebody identify this bayonet?

Kilroy

Well-Known Member
It is for sale, and it is being sold as a Mauser bayonet, but the owner does not know if it is German, WWI, or WWII in origin

Can anybody place it?

Thanks,
Walt

Hi Walt,
with what I can see from the photo I would say it's a Turkish M1935, blade length 254mm(ish)? any markings on the recasso, pommel or scabbard?
Would the markings on the press catch side of the pommel be AS.FA by any chance?
100% Not German,Germany did not use a muzzle ring!

OK! Thanks bunch! I was suspicious of the price, but you cannot discount the possibility that you can still find a bargain.

Does anybody know where genuine Mauser types are sold on the web?

Thank You again,
Walt

Hi Walt,
there are usually a few on Specialist Auctions, but if you have a general collection of bayonets the Turkish M1935 is not a bad one to get hold of,if the price is good,as it is one of the few 'newly made' bayonets from Turkey,in the main Turkey re-used and adapted captured and bought bayonets from other countries.
One other 'new' made Turkish bayonet, the FN G1, is a collectors nightmare as it closely resembles the old German WW1 ersatz bayonet and I have seen more than one collection proudly displaying a G1 as a ersatz before now!

Walt,

I used to collect German Bayonets, and the best place is scan Ebay for it, when you want to have a WW1 bayonet, there is the;

model 1898/05 "Butcher, which is there in a few models (common WW1 model):

1898/05 aA (alte art) old design (wide ears at the muzzle area of the pommel, and/or a flash protector between the grips).
1898/05 na (Neue art) new design (small ears)
1898/05 Sage (with sawback) in both models to be found
1898/05 Sage abg (Sawbck removed by grinding away the teeth)

M1898/02: Aa and Na and with sawback (long slim blade)

M1884/98/III:Bayonet used in WW2:

earlier model with wooden grips, later models with bakelite grips
navy marked models, with a "O"for Ostsee issued bayonets.
navy marked models with a "N"for Nortsee isued bayonets
Police issued bayonets (eagle with number on it, no regular numbers)

early models WW1 etc (model 1884/98/I en 1884/98/II)

Then there are the dress bayonets, but that will be a chapter on his own.

For all bayonets try to find a match between the scabbard and bayonet, (serialnumbers). Be aware of the newly made scabbards, and renumbered bayonets from Portugal, the do get on the marked.

If you have questions about a bayonet, just ask, i used to own over 200 of them in the past.

From one ex bayonet collector to another, did you ever manage to find a S98/14 for your collection? and one point I would like to make about your very useful list above is the WW2 S84/98 grips, wood was again used again in 1944 because of the diminishing supplies of bakelite.
Oh and by dress bayonets I hope you refer to walking out bayonets and not the mythical parade bayonets! sorry, that one is a pet hate of mine:tinysmile_hmm_t:

PS can you still get bayonets on e-bay? I thought they 'banned' them?

Yes, i had one of these, you will find them rarely in the woodwork or in markets Belgium, but mostly in a used shape without a scabbard. Most of the time people dont know what it is. I still have somewhere even a rare m1898/05, reused in 1920 (marked) and stamped with RLM, very rare, and it was used to mix paint. poor picture, but it is stil blued, and you can see the mark RLM.

Ebay is still the place to go for them they are not banned. I ofted visited pawnshops in the US, and found a lot of bargains too.
With the dress bayonets I ment the bayonets to wear on the gala uniforms like for the police, of fire police, no those ugly duglys the Germans designed too. I tried to collect all makers, with the long blade, short blade and double sided tip, yes those were the days, collecting bayonets. I have to stop, because i get emotional now, and want to sell all my ammo, en start te recollect again.
show off.
