C170/H3? Naval Half Box

Hi All,

Another find, Should be an easy thing to identify as a Naval Half Box, Has the correct paint job and most of the correct embossed markings except that it is marked as a C170 and not as it should be for the date which is a H3, apart from that small point very good condition sadly missing its tin liner.

It looks vaguely similar to the drawing in this link. http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/threads/27539-H-3-mk-I

I havn't seen a C170 or a H3 so can't comment on either.

The cream paint job, does it look as if it was put on over a previous paint job? It looks a bit slap dash to me, but that might just be photos. Do the embossings look as if they were original to the underneath colour? I'm thinking that it was an H3 that was embossed with the Naval N and the C170 at a later date. Is there anything on the base?

Hi,

Had a look at your link my box is 11 1/16 x 8 5/8 x 5 inches, this box has been refurbished by the look of it the refurb mark is under the date but very hard to read ? 15 1/62, there are no markings on the bottom of the box. The Naval N, makers make and date are definitely original to the box, I would suspect as you think the C170 is a later addition done at the time of refurbishment. Refurbishment would have taken place in a Naval Depot (RNAD) for Naval use, the box has been over painted in some places badly (Friday afternoon job) but would have looked OK when done.

Life has not been to kind to my poor box, the dimensions don't quite match the H3, maybe someone else has an idea as to its use and what the C170 was used for.
All the Best.
Richard

PS, Its not Cream the Navy call it "Sand", Standard colour for all RN only Armaments boxes until post war.

Hi All,

I now have a proper set of photo's from Gary (Hangerman) to compare with my box,

H3 01.jpgH3 02.jpgH3 03.jpgH3 04.jpgH3 05.jpg

I now accept that while close, my poor box is not an H3 and the man that would have been able to tell me at work retired 6 month's ago. Ah well back to the drawing board with this one, Yes I do have Gary's permission to upload his photo's to the site. All the Best.

Hi All,

Well as I said yesterday I hawked my photo around but did not get any firm answers, so will have to keep looking. The day was not a complete waste I managed to pick up a 20mm Phalanx Drill round being used as a Paper weight. All the Best.
