British WW1 No44 Fuze adaptor

Good Evening All,

I've had this one for a little while. Its an inert First World War British No44 fuze, but im puzzled with the adaptor it is in. The diameter of the thread on it is about 2 inches and it just has the number '498' stamped on it. I have another adapter on another No44 fuze (a No2 i think) which has a 2inch thread.
Does anyone know what shell this would have been fitted to? My 6inch, 8inch & 9.2inch all have a standard 2inch fuze thread, so is this adaptor for non British shell?

Hopefully someone will be able to enlighten me? :tinysmile_twink_t:

Thanks,

Ben.

hi
It's not and adaptator but a reduced shell eye like for example 4.7 in or 5 in naval, i think
Not to be remove for fixing 2 in fuze and only used fuze like GS 1 in

Occasionally I find expended 25 Pr smoke shell, one version of which has a steel adapter that screws into the main body of the shell and into which is screwed the No 221 (2 inch guage) fuze. I've just measured one and the external thread diameter of the adapter is about 2.5 inches. Perhaps you have something similar.

When you have and adaptor N2 le n is stamping on like N2 I or N2 II
On reduced brass or steel eye, no N stamping but sometime a lot number like 1259 for example

I found a BL 60Pdr HE fitted with a No 44 fuze screwed in a No 2 "adapter"
Should someone have technical data about this adapter ?

Hello,

As Doctor said, we must make a difference between adapter N2 for 1in GS fuze and a adapter made to reduce the head hole to screw a GS fuze. A shell with an adapter N2 can be fuzed with a 1in GS fuze or a 2in fuze, not a shell with a "reducer-adapter" for GS fuze.
Example in picture 1 : on the left, reducer-adapter for 4.5in Common Lyddite (this shell is only fuzed with 1in fuze) ; on the right adapter N2 on 4.5in HE (the shell can be fuzed with a 1inch fuze + adapter 2 or a single 2inch fuze).
Picture 2 : difference between adapter N2 MkI and MkII.

Cheers.

Thanks Minenaz16,
now I known what I've find yesterday.
It's effectively an adapter No2 Mk I on a BL 60 Pr HE.
