British VS&M Marked 42x186R Case For Identification

I recently picked up an early British case which I am unable to identify. Case dimensions are 42x186R with VS&M in circle headstamp. Image as per below with a standard 2Pdr No1 Mk1 on RHS for scale. Can someone please identify it for me? Thanks in anticipation...

Quite possibly Italian 42mmx186R Nordenfelt cases. Tne 3 dot crimp and the ring around the primer are typical of Nordenfelt cases though these appear to be made by Vickers. Vickers Maxim Nordenfelt was the company name for a while at the end ofthe 19th century whichs gives a probable date.

I tried to send a scan of the drawing in book and a photo of the complete round that I have, but I have a new computer and it is not accepting the commands from the printer. if I get it sorted out soon, will try again.

Hi Frank. Diameter immediately in front of the extractor rim is 50.3mm and diameter across the base is 55.5mm. Image of the rim profile is attached.

These measurements match those of the Italian 42x186R. It came in cannister and explosive projectiles. I understand it was used in a landing gun by the Italian Navy. The other 42mm Nordenfelt used a longer 260mm case and different projectile.

Thank you. Very interesting. What was the 'official' name of this weapon? Was it used by any other country or just made by the British for the Italian Navy?

As far as I can find out, Italy is the only one who used this gun. But finding information after a hundred years about small guns no one really cared about, is hard work. You can find a lot of info on the big guns, but not the pea shooters.I am drawn to the Nordenfelts and Italian guns because they are scarce and little known. It is a lonely trip! Do know the Spanish used the 42x260R, as I have one.I have anohter with just the N mark which could have been used anywhere.Still have not got my scanning and email problem solved. When I do, will send pictures.

Thank you for this information. I can fully identify with the hard work spent in identifying these 'obscure' cartridges. Another 'oddity' is the 38.5x197R which I believe is also known as the 1.5Pdr Heavy as opposed to the 38x115R which is the 1.5Pdr Light. I'm pleased that I now know what my latest addition is. I would be very pleased to see a scan of your complete rounds as and when they are available.
