British 1937 round ID

Hi fellas,

Any thoughts about this one, I guess you'll ID it easily. But with reference to the projectile, what was the purpose of the recess above the drive band? Incidently, it stands approx 2 feet to 2.5 feet tall and the projectile is solid.

Hi, it looks like a 17 pounder projectile that has lost its top driving band. I'm sure this ones in the wrong case.
Are there any stampings on the projectile?
Dave.

i'm not sure, but to me it looks very well to the 3in ap mentioned on the stamp. i don't have a picture at the moment, but i will look for it.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the prompt reply, but the projectile is chromed or polished and therefore no markings are visible.

Missing Driving Band

Hi Cirus, as SG500 says your projectile is minus its top Driving Band as you can see the "wavy line" to prevent the Band from making any rotational movement on the projectile.

Nice item-any stamps at all on the sides or base ??

That "Rifling" does look remarkably like the rifling from a 17 Pounder !

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the info, certainly helpful but after a while of searching the internet under 17 pounder, I have not been able to find anything that matches this, any ideas?

Looks like a 17 Pr AP projectile to me, Theres a good chance that the markings may have been stamped onto the lower band or are covered by the chrome.

The top driving band was probably lost during firing.

The gap between the two bands should be 11.5mm.

I've attached a picture of an APC round, which is essentially your projectile but with a penetrative cap.

The case you have is for a 3in 20cwt anti aircraft gun.
