Guys,

I bought this round on SA and it arrived this morning, I was giving it a light clean and I noticed that the headstamp looked like it had been ground down. On closer inspection I can make out a '40' underneath the UI. I have attached some scans sorry about their quality but the cameras broken. The round also has a wooden projectile with some small traces of black and yellow paint.

I must be some type of alteration of an existing case as the primer flash holes are there and the 'stub' (or whatever it is called) to hold the primer

Its an Inspectors Dummy Mk. I made by Royal Laboratories

Looks to me made from an existing cartridge and re-stamped?

I am sure the experts will pipe up....

U.I

Where did you buy that from on SA? Was it Malta?

I strongly suspect that is a fake and that the headstamp has been done with a jeweller's engraver. It has probably been made by filing the headstamp from a W.II case (they are often quite shallowly stamped) and then plating it. The U.I should have a blind cap chamber with no anvil or fire holes and a jacketed bullet.

A while back I purchased a purported dated Woolwich made .45 Gardener Gatling round from there for 50, except that when it arrived it was obviously faked from an unheadstamped American .45 round. I got my money back after publishing the sellers details in the ECRA and IAA journals.

First picture is what I received. Looks familiar? Second is a genuine U.I and the complete round is on the right of the third picture.

Regards
TonyE

Yes it came from Malta, if the headstamp had not be 'altered' I would have put it down to a 'Home guard' type of arrangement something similar to your red tipped one. Have you ever know or read anything that might suggest it was practice to do this? It seems alot of effort!

Boys

Michael, did the WI round that you enquired about come from the same source?

Hi Chris,

No the W1 came from a UK internet dealer, I need to get myself a proper projectile puller, the metal bars are making too many marks on some of my old 50cal I've practiced on

Fake

Get your money back from Malta. He is a known faker. I will put the picture of your fake .55 U.I in the next IAA and ECRA journal if you give permission.

He will say that he was unaware it was a fake and he bought it in good faith. Just demand your money back including postage and tell him you are not returning the round so that it cannot be sold to someone else.

Apart from these two rounds I have seen a number of very dodgy looking items on SA from this guy.

Caveat emptor several times over!

With regards to "Home Guard" made drill rounds, they tend to be on ordinary cases without any attempt to alter the headstamp. My red one has a cast lead bullet painted red and I have seen others similar. One develops a "feel" over the years for the genuine item as I am sure many of the pals here know.

I have seen this faker on here under the same username he used to use on ebay with his location as Malta.

Just to add to this Tony, I too bid on that Gardner round (he often fills the engraved stamps with white to cover up the engraving) and I was an under bidder, I was offered it because the winner and the under bidder had apparently backed out of the deal, I sent my money off (yes, stupid me, I should have smelt a rat) and didn't receive a thing. After about 10 extremely polite e mails on my part (I usually take that line and it usually works) I did get my money back, I remember your article in ECRA, yes buyers beware of rare rounds from this particular seller in Malta.
Dave.

Now to be fair guys I have recieved some nice items in the past (see the attachment) and he is very good posting out the items nice and quick. I'm hoping that it just the fact that he has been none the wiser  and bought them off someone else a bit more shady.

Anyway i've asked for a refund and we will see.

Hi yes good point I can only base my experience on the one round, hence my wording "buyers beware", just have a close look at the rounds when you get them.
Dave.

Also to be fair, that is one of the oldest tricks in the book,to send a new customer 'good' items to start with then fob you off with 'junk' later!
Also if TonyE warns you of a dodgy piece/dealer I would take that as written in stone, what he does not know about British SAA and the trade aint worth knowing mate!

Cheers
Tony
