Just copied this description for the L15A1 DS reduced range version should explain how these function
"On firing, the projectile travels up the barrel with the sabot splitting along the four
longitudinal grooves into four petals which separate radially on leaving the barrel.
Simultaneous with the sabot petals separating, the base and pusher Assembly also
separate from the projectile on clearing the barrel. Under extreme conditions fragments
of sabot may be carried rearward of the gun due to ricochet effects or prevailing wind
conditions. The pusher assembly falls away from the sub-projectile rapidly and impacts
the ground some distance short of the target dependent on the range of the target
being engaged. The tracer composition also ignites as the projectile leaves the barrel,
ignition having been delayed by the tracer ignition delay disc fitted in the pusher
assembly.
22 The sub-projectile continues towards the target, however during flight the passage
of air through the bore chokes the sub-projectile below a critical velocity. The result of
this is an increase in aerodynamic drag which reduces the range of the sub-projectile."

Thanks spotter,
that pretty much answers my second question, all over the place!
