Hi to all again,
Looking for a sort of id for this,I know what it is,but don't know the correct term for it, and I know what it is used for.
Would like to find out what shell/round this one is used for?
Cheers
Tony
Many thanks Andy and Chris,
couldn't belive how simular these are still are today(ish) to the WW1 brass 18pdr ones I used to dig up in Belgium.
Still,if it works why change it.
I think the proper term for it is safety clip or in military speak, `Clip, safety'. I seem to remember seeing them on 105 mm Field and 76 mm Armoured Car cartridges. Just measured a 20 p piece - 21 mm diameter - so yes I agree it's probably for a 105 mm case.
In the USN, primer protectors came attached to many of the seperate loading cases. They were of a different design than the one you have. I'm not sure of the proper nomenclature but we called the "butterflies" because of their shape. What is interesting is that there must have been millions of them made but they are impossible to find here in the US. I'd make someone a good offer or trade for one.
Here's a drawing I made of one, years ago, when I was searching for one.
The interesting thing about your clip Tony is that it does not any indication of the "tab/arm" which when hit correctly releases it from the case as these are marked with a splash of Red !
Below are the Primer protector caps for:-
105 mm H
105 mm GFD
76 mm ARMDC
And you will note they all have a red "Tab/arm" indicating this is the release when hit!
Hi Chris,
There was a crushed one of these that did have the red paint on it,but can find no traces of any ever having been on this one(only washed the dirt off!)
I also have one the same in your first photo, but rusty!,that also has the red 'tab'.
