Anglo-boer war ammo box?

I saw a wooden box, painted black in a shop yesterday that looks like it may be an ammunition box dating from the 1899-1902 Anglo-Boer War.
It measure approx 530cm wide, 220cm deep and 190cm high with a hinged lid. It is zinc lined and would have had cord/rope handles on either side (now missing). On the one corner are the following stamps: 1900 XIV and the /I\ mark with R.A below it.

It appears in good condition, missing handles aside but the price of GBP 45 seems a bit high. Can anyone tell me more about this box and indeed if this is a fair price?

Thanking you

This List of Changes entry does not match up exactly but having found it I send it for interest anyway.

If the construction is dovetailed (some are nailed & so on but dovetailing is the nicest) and it's not actually battered all you have to do is strip the paint, you should be able to see what the wood is, mahogany hopefully and it will be heavy as such. Navel boxes had wire handles so the hole where the cord went through will be much smaller. The price is very good, I'd buy it in a secound with that date if all I had to do was strip paint, the tin liner is a bonus as that gets tossed often. Let me know how you make out. You want to look for a string that attaches the lid to the box and the pin which might be held by a copper wire, but these things can be replaced.
