this one is a centre fire, paper patched with a headstamp that reads '4(?) 5 11 8'. The case is 56mm long, the base dia. is 16mm and the calibre 11mm. Probably European. Any thoughts?

thanks, Dave

10.75 x 58mmR Russian Berdan. The 8 and the 5 in the headstamp indicate the year of production or 1885 for your cartridge. What you are calling the number "4" is actually the Cyrillic letter "Ч". The II indicates the cartridge was produced in the second trimester (the 2nd set of three months) of 1885.
Adopted by Russia in 1869 and was phased out of use with the adoption of the 7.62x54mmR Mosin-Nagant in 1891.
