Air rifles

Good to hear. I have just got back into it after a few years break. I now realise how quick you can get rusty through not firing! What rifles do you have?

a Weihrauch/Theoben HW90 rifle .22" (long and bloody heavy, but so nice to use) and a Webley Omega carbine .22"(modified with a Theoben gas ram)....both on ticket, the HW90 puts out 36flbs through a chrono and the Webley 26flbs....the extra power over the 12flbs has advantages and disadvantages, the advantages are super accuracy(you don't get the pellet drop that you get with a 12flbs rifle) and you can use really heavy pellets like the Barracuda.....the main disadvantage is that rabbits often still run on and bolt down holes before they realise that they are actually dead!.....what do you have Rob?

I'm not with FAC, so I have a 12ft/lbs BSA lightning SE in .22 (I leant it to my dad for the last 5 years or so, had it back about 2 months) and just ordered a Weirauch HW97KT.

Had to order a scope separately though as it doesn't come with one. I also have a half power 177 cadet rifle so my kids can learn to shoot.

two nice bits of kit Rob,bet that thumb hole stock on the HW makes for comfy use,do hunt or target shoot?

What are the advantages of having a FAC air rifle when you could have a .22 Rimfire on FAC? Is it easier to get air rifles on FAC than cartridge rifles?

I do both, but usually target shoot as I live in a built up area at the moment. I love the hunt. I need to find more places to hunt.

It's good to hear others who are into air rifles/handguns. I love to buy broken old rusty ones and refurbish. They just keep showing up sometimes. Having a PAL (FAC) is great but if you shoot air you can just go out back and not bother anyone.

For the reason others have mentioned, and, without bragging(or maybe I am),my HW90 will out perform a .22" rimfire anyway you would like to think of:xd:,and of course there is no restriction on the amount of ammo held.

Has anyone got or used a .25"?.....have been toying with the idea of changing the barrel out for a .25"

Hi Rob,Tony,
I used to be a very keen airgunner many years ago, I still plink and hunt a little but not as much as I would like. I still have a couple of my rifles, a Air Arms Khamsin side lever left handed thumbhole stock in .177 and a HW 77 K in .177 as well as a Webley Tempest airpistol. A couple of old BSA plinkers as well, as for using .25 I did have a HW77 in .25 but just could not get to grips with it after only ever shooting the flater trajectory .177, you could hear the pellet cut through the air as well I remember.
Best Weasel.

Thanks for the input with the .25" Weasel, the idea behind trying a .25" barrel was larger pellet mass = more body shock to give wabbits the nod that it is actually 'curtains'....velocity would drop a bit too,at the moment even heavy .22" pellets like barracudas are going clean through even out to 75 yards at such a rate of knots and they don't get the idea and run on:tinysmile_cry_t4:
so at the moment having to wait and pick my shot when said rabbit is totally relaxed, slightest bit of suspicion that something is 'afoot' and they're off

Hi Tony,
The .25 I had was not an FAC so it was perhaps a little lacking in some areas although it did have a lot more knock down power than a .177 or .22 rifle of the same power. Best Weasel

I didn't think about the ammo restriction issue.

Another benefit I suppose would be the lack of cleaning compared to a powder-burning rifle.

I toyed with the idea for a while of getting a FAC. I didn't bother in the end as it just creates more hassle really. As said before. I like to just go out back and have a shoot when I see the suns out and not have to worry about safes and stuff. Ammo very cheap too.

I used to collect old air rifles, including a Hakim/Haenel Egyptian army training rifle, sadly most of my collection went when I got made redundant,(the bills still keep coming in even if your wages dont,)all I have now is a webly pistol, quite old,a Gamo Falcon pistol,a Meteor (needs new seals)and I am sorting out a BSA Buccaneer,(Meteor barrel and a Scorpion piston and chamber in a plastic thumbhole stock,)one of the best rifles I had was a Khamsin,I owned various match rifles when I used to shoot in the local pub/club teams,(Perkins Engines)now at my age I could not hit a barn door sitting on the latch,I am still on the lookout for anything interesting as they still come to the surface occasionally,
Cheers,
Don,

I used to have a Meteor and loved it. Mine was .177, quite low power but great for plinking. I was toying with the idea of getting an old Webley Tepest.

Just picked up on this thread. I control rabbits with a rifle, started many years ago with a single shot .177 Falcon precharged and moved on to a magazine one. like Falcons as simple mags and very good triggers, got a short barrelled one in .22 but prefer the .177. Had a theoben Rapid in .20, rubbish mags, awful trigger handled badly but lots of shots from the ugly buddy bottle. .177 shoots flatter I use Bisley magnums after lots of accuracy testing. Dont get runners as you can put the pellet in the brain every time out to 35yds sensible range. The .22 rimfire will richochet all over the field after passing through the creature, is loud and limited where you can use it safely. .17HMR is very good, flat shooting, much less risk of richocheting but not cheap to run and has to be cleaned properly and so far they dont seem to mind the noise, the victim never even hears it. If I had to have just one of them it would have to be the .177 air rifle. Any one want my old Cadet and Meteor?

I can echo your findings with the Rapid seven 2pounder,the other thing which was a pain at the time was that Theoben stated that the buddy bottle must not be re filled from commercial bottles because of impurities!....trips down to the coast to find a diving centre to re fill was the last straw with me and did a part ex with it after 2 months of owning it
