A question on paint removal

For the box collectors out there -

I've recently acquired a historically special (to me) wooden box which I have posted on the Bombatorium thread. At some time in the past it was overpainted with an OD paint, which I would like to remove to uncover/clean up the original markings. I've had some suggestions that lightly applied acetone may remove it without damaging the markings, I figured I would look for additional advice before I attempt anything.

Regardless of the path I choose, I will test first on a small bottom portion. Part of my concern is that I do not want to use something and find out three months later that the markings fade away also - I'd appreciate any suggestions....

Try Methylated spirit .(that purple stuff) its available at most DIY shops . Like you say , try a hidden corner first. Hangarman

Good suggestions, start with Meths or even some household cleaners like the citrus based type, acetone can work but tends to evaporate before it has softened the paint, sometimes an advantage!.
If you end up with faded markings i find a coat of oil or clear polyurethane can often enhance them .

cheers
Bob

Jeff, you might also try some steam. Get a steam iron on an unimportant spot.
