Hello, Can any onetell me what the case and shell dimensions are for the 76mm Hotchkissgun the English used in the Boer war.
Thanks Jim

Sorry I don't have an exact on the case dimensions. The overall length of complete cartridge is about 359 mm, length of projectile is about 175 mm, diametre of projectile 174.4.

I'm pretty sure the 3 inch Hotchkiss was not used in the Boer War. The 12 pounder 6 cwt and 15 pounder 7 cwt guns are both 3 inch (76.2mm) and where used there, while the only Hotchkiss' as far as I know were the 3 pounder (47mm) and 6 pounder (57mm).

I have the case dimensions as 76mm x 298mm, but can't confirm as I have only seen photos of this rare case on the net (old auction I missed...). This gun was used by the Cape Mounted Rifles/Brabant's Horse and was, according to the recollection of some Boer gunners who faced it, one of the "most dangerous" guns in the British arsenal. Sadly this rare piece it is in ruins today after the "anti-colonial" East London municipality had it scrapped from where it was on display at the Ton Hall. It was saved just in the nick of time from a local scrapyard, but the damage was already done...

The image you show is of a 75 mm gun, the case discussed is 76 mm and for a British gun 76,2 mm would make more sense. In my references I do not have a 75x298 or 76x298 shell case, i do have a 76,2x298R? shell case but this is refered to as a Russain WW2 shell case (as I have no images, this could well be wrong). Do I see correctly in the shell case image the shell case is necked and has a normal rim (not a double rim)?

Hi, this Hotchkiss was not a standard British service ordnance piece, but rather built in France for the export market, hence the 75mm caliber.

This gun, together with a rare 12-pr Armstrong RML, that the colonial government purchased from the Free State for the Morosi War, are today at the Buffalo Regiment (ex Kaffrarian Rifles). Knowing what the army currently looks like in South Africa, there will not be funds to restore them...
