Cutaway model of a russian 57mm S-5S Flechette aircraft rocket. The rocket is used as an anti-personal weapon, the flechettes are ejected at great speed by a powder charge in the direction of the flight.
The rocket warhead contains 1000 flechettes, 40mm stamped steel arrows weighing 1.26 g each. The arrows are stacked alternately from head to tail, in four blocks along the length, to allow for denser placement. The solid tip of the rocket is held in place with three pins, sealed with a rubber ring.
Below is the mechanically armed base fuze with the black powder expulsion charge above it (32 grams). There is a solid 20mm metal plate between the flechettes and the expulsion charge.
The rocket motor is one powder stick in a steel tube with an elongated eight-fin exhaust nozzle at the rear. Due to the high mass of the warhead, the bevel of the fins was changed to make the rocket more stable in flight, resulting in less rotation.
When the rocket is fired, the rocket motor`s igniter receives an electrical pulse and ignites the motor igniter charge. The rocket motor burns for just 1.1 seconds and flies about 300 meters during this time. The wings fold out and cause the rocket to rotate.
One second after the rocket motor has finished burning, the bottom fuze ignites the expulsion charge. This charge pushes the expulsion plate forward, pushing of the tip of the warhead and releasing the flechettes which spread out in a cone shape.
Length of the rocket: 1065 mm
Weight of the warhead : 3.08 kg
Weight of the rocket: 5.94 kg
Fuzes of the warhead: B-678
Black powder charge: 32 grams
