Bought a carton of 5.56 drill rounds made in 1995 by SDE and marked L14 A1. They reminded me of the drill rounds made by Lines Bros during the 1940's. Can anyone give me any more information on them?
Cheers

There were two orders to SDE for 5.56mm drill rounds and somewhere I have the details. They also made smaller quantities of the 7.62x51mm for the chain gun and a small quantity of .50 Browning. The 7.62 drill is the L41A1 and the .50 is the L2A1.

Tony E, Thanks for the info, do you know what quantities were made of the 5.56?

Cheers

It doesn't strike me as being the most robust material to make drill rounds from. What was the life expectancy, was it measured in cycles or were they just cheap? Cheers Gary

My memory was a bit adrift when I said there were two orders to SDE for the 5.56mm drill rounds.

The actual figures now that I have found them are:

1995: 200,000 rounds 5.56mm L14A1 Drill
2004: 200,000 rounds 7.62mm L41A1 Drill
2004: 15,100 rounds .50 Browning L2A1 Drill
2008: 99,680 rounds 7.62mm L41A1 Drill

I can post pictures of the 7.62mm version if interested.

I would be interested to see a photo of the .50 BMG one if anyone has one.

As there were only 15,000 of these made, they are abviously rarer than the others.
