40mm Bofors?

Derek

Well-Known Member
Just got this projectile, I believe it is a 40mm Bofors AP?? But I would like to know the period as there is no date stamp and the country of origin.
The driving band is stamped: NR MK 4 MOD LOT 21. It is 159mm in length and 40mm dia.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.....

Nice Bofors there. It looks just like my 40mm M81A I have dated 1945. Except yours is much nicer. I think my M81A is U.S. and your Mk 4 is British but dont know the manufacturer.

Hi Tigbrand, If I have understood you correctly, I make it 54mm.
Now I would like to know what type of Bofors this is for and a possible date, is a Naval or Army round?

"NR MK 4 MOD LOT 21" is U.S. Navy nomenclature, not British. probably 40mm L/60 but I don't know for sure.

Hi Derek, thanks for the reply. I have measured my case and from the top of the case to the middle of the crimp is 14.5mm,so you measured somewhere different! I think your shell type is correct for the case though. As Tony E says the markings are not British.US and Canadian projectiles are marked on the band. Does nobody else have an idea of the use of this round, case or projectile??? Cheers Tig.
