4.5 Inch Star Shell...

Darren

Well-Known Member
Ive been meaning to put these photos up on the forum for a some time.

Ive had this 4.5 Inch Star Shell and case for a while and thanks to another member was lucky enough to get a fuze recently for it to make it a complete round. I have not put the shell in the case yet as once it is in there it will not come back out.
Not usually a problem but this case is nicely stamped HE so i think i will keep it aside until a nice HE shell comes along, its always nice to have a correct match. In the meantime i will also be on the look out for another case for the Star Shell.

I am still looking for a correct case for this star shell, ideally the case would be stencilled star shell on the base. If anyone has a spare for sale please PM me.

Thanks,
Darren

Just added one of these shells to my collection too, courtesy of SA. Very nice, but surprisingly heavy!
If you come across an extra case I would be interested.

Also, what are the chances of finding the internals, of the parachute and flare pot?

Yes they are pretty heavy, cases do come up now and again so you will find one for sure, as for the internal parts that you require i am not sure as i have never seen any come up for sale.

Here is a spent flare pot w/parachute(hanging in center of pic). And a 105mm sectioned illum. projectile stuck in a spare case/shell/hull.

Thanks for those Rick.
The cross section is indeed very nice.
I have seen an 81mm pot and chute for sale, so might get that as an interim just to display the type of thing.

Got to mess around out in the shed(the weather's nice) and took some additional pics. The flare pot is approx. 72mm OD. The 105 close-ups are to show what a fine example it is. Most likely a factory display piece at one time. Scuffed a bit, but nothing major. And missing that fuze screw. :tinysmile_angry_t:

i just received one of these shells today from SA surprisingly heavy. i guess that makes three of us looking for cases now. Darren what fuze does it take, as id like to make mine a complete round also.

Slick that a great looking shed you have there, looks like you have quite the collection.

Nathan, the fuze that you will need is a N9 Mk1 mechanical time fuze.
