.303" drill round

Morning to all,
picked up this drill round at a boot sale last week end,in a box of buttons of all places!
I think it may be a Mk IX, the only reference I can find on it is in TonyE's book, quote" WWII expendient.Although the case is usually left as plain brass,it may be found with tinned or chromed cases" but it don't say nowt about oles!
So is this correct for a MkIX drill round or is it some thing else and should it have a cancellation mark on the headstamp?

Tony

Drill

It is certainly a Mark IX type, but it may be a commercially made one by A.J.Parker or Parker Hale. They made that chrome plated type with four holes from before the war to the 1960s. They were used by club shooters and of course the Home Guard during the war. Having said that, I have chromed drilled Mark IXs that are definitely military. It seems most of those though were made by Greenwood & Batley.

Unfortunately it is impossible to tell beyond that. Sorry!

BTW, I am off to the ECRA annual meeting in Switzerland in about an hour's time so will be off air until next week. After that I am on holiday in Cuba for two weeks so I won't be around much until late in October.

Regards
