3 inch signal ?

Hi again Guys,
Does anyone know exactly what this item is ? I think it may be a signal of some kind possibly for the 3 inch mortar. It has a 3\" diameter and is 2.25\" tall. It resembles a 2 or 2.5 ich signal grenade but bigger. As you can see by the pics it's not in the best condition, there are no internals and it has the remains of white paint on it which I suppose could either be illum or drill. Any ideas ? Tony.

This is NOT a positive id but to me it looks like a mills grenade detonator tin which has had a handle soldered on ,The white paint could it have been used by an instructor when carrying dets for throwing practice grenades..Just my thoughts
